Carmelo and Nuggets End Lakers' Perfect Record
Denver Nuggets Beat Los Angeles Lakers 118-112
Perhaps some Lakers fans might have been hoping that Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant could lead the team to a perfect regular season record, but Carmelo Anthony and the Nuggets put an end to that hope on Thursday night by defeating the Lakers 118-12, thus putting and end to the Laker's perfect season record. The Lakers are now 8-1 for the season, the Nuggets 5-4.
Bryant had a great game, scoring a season-high 34 points. In the process, he became the youngest player ever to reach the 26,000-points milestone, beating NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain by 34 days. Lakers big man Gasol got a double-double with his 17 points and 20 rebounds. But it was just not enough.
"It was real big, especially against the Lakers," said Anthony, who got a double-double with his 32 points and 13 rebounds.
Ty Lawson, who led the Nuggets with 5 assists, played a key role in the Denver victory, contributing 11 points in a 16-0 run that gave the Nuggets a 101-95 lead in the fourth quarter.
"I was just trying to attack," said Lawson, who scored 17 points.
"Their backcourt was a little stagnant, and I wanted to speed up the
game and negate their height."
"I thought Ty was great," said Nuggets head coach George Karl. "When we went small, our speed beat their size."
"With a small lineup, they open the floor and they're more of an attack mode," said Gasol. "They're very capable of making runs and getting hot, especially at home."
