The African National Congress, the ruling party in South Africa’s government, has selected deputy leader Kgalema Motlanthe to become the caretaker President following the resignation of Thabo Mbeki on Sunday.
Motlanthe would hold the position until elections are held in early 2009, an election expected to be won by new ANC leader Jacob Zuma. Zuma has said he would not take the position of president until he is elected by the people and he supports the selection of Motlanthe in the interim.
Mbeki headed the ANC but was recently defeated by Zuma in elections within the party. His decision to resign ahead of the 2009 elections was made after allegations surfaced accusing him of interfering in a corruption case involving Zuma.
Mbeki has denied interfering in the case but said he would step down at the request of the ANC.
