Islamic Militants Launch Attacks in Mogadishu, Nearly 40 Dead

Nearly 40 people were killed and more than 60 left injured after Islamic militants launched attacks in the Somali capital city of Mogadishu.

The militants targeted the city’s airport as well as the presidential palace but the majority of those killed and injured were in the Bakara market when mortars and heavy gunfire rained down. The Somali government, along with Ethiopian troops, countered the Islamic insurgents with mortars and gunfire of their own.

With a weakened government that holds little power over day-to-day life, Somalia has seen violence on a daily basis inside Mogadishu. The Islamic militants were run out of the city in 2006 but have staged a consistent battle to take control of the government.

Hospitals have been filled with victims of the blasts and gunfire and the buildings have been targeted by the militants as well.

The militants also attacked African Union peacekeeper bases near the airport and in the K4 district.
