A small Pakistani militant group identifying themselves as Fidayeen-e-Islam has claimed responsibility for Saturday’s bombing at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad that killed nearly 60 people and left more than 250 people injured.
The claims have not been verified by authorities but the group has been tied to noted militant Baitullah Mehsud who has been a vocal critic of the Pakistani government and its allegiance with the West.
According to the group the attack was carried out in an effort to force “American crusaders” out of the country. On Saturday a suicide bomber detonated a truck filled with explosives just outside the entrance to the hotel.
The front of the 290-room Marriott was destroyed while fires burned throughout the night making it difficult for rescue workers to reach the injured.
Fidayeen-e-Islam is said to operate out of the tribal region of Waziristan along the Afghan border. That area has been the battleground of many engagements between U.S. and pro-Taliban insurgents over the past few years.
