An apartment building under renovation caught fire Monday in Shanghai, China, leaving at least 42 people dead. State media reports the building housed 156 families. Firefighters rescued more than 100 people. At least 90 residents were injured. A doctor at Jing’an Central Hospital said at least 20 people had serious injuries.
The fire started on scaffolding and soon engulfed the building, according to witnesses. The cause of the blaze is unclear. Firefighters spent more than 6 hours extinguishing the flames. No other details were available.
