November 16, 2010, Quincy, MA… Two crossovers and an SUV led year-over-year sales gains for Mazda in October, helping the Japanese automaker post a monthly sales increase of 19.5%. The full-size Mazda Tribute posted the strongest jump in year-over-year sales, up 62.2%, followed by the
Mazda CX-9 and CX-7 crossovers, up 51.2% and 41.6%, respectively.
Mazda’s crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) are also leading in sales growth for the year, with the CX-7 up 48.2% and the CX-9 up 44.3%. Overall Mazda sales for the year have grown by 10%. Mazda includes the United States, Canada and Mexico in its North American sales data.
“There are things that car buyers really like about SUVs, especially here in New England,” said Phil Ternullo, general manager of Massachusetts
Mazda dealer Quirk Mazda. “SUVs and crossovers offer higher ground clearance and more cargo room, two things that really help out when snow hits the pavement and local drivers juggle errands and weekend ski trips.”
The Mazda CX-9 seems purpose-built for Massachusetts families, offering front-wheel drive, available all-wheel drive and enough ground clearance to keep it from bottoming out when it meets deep potholes. The CX-9 also provides third-row seats as a standard feature, something that other crossovers list as an optional extra.
The CX-9 also delivers plenty of pep in dry conditions, as well as the power needed to muscle through tough weather, thanks to a 24-valve, 3.7-liter V6 under the hood that generates 273 horsepower. Although this is one of the larger engines available in its class, it matches up well on fuel economy, delivering 17 mpg/city and 24 mpg/highway in front-wheel drive models, and 16 mpg/city and 22 mpg/highway with all-wheel drive.
Safety features include dynamic stability control, traction control, which keeps all the wheels pulling at the same power, and roll-stability control that works with the brakes to keep the CX-9 stable during emergency maneuvers or sudden skids on icy roads. Greater
Boston Mazda buyers who opt for the Grand Touring edition can get a voice-controlled, built-in navigation system that includes real-time traffic updates, helpful for navigating around the Hampton tolls or the Southeast Expressway during peak travel times. The Grand Touring edition also offers a rear-seat entertainment package, including a 9-inch LCD screen with a DVD player, surround sound and a video game port that can keep the kids quiet on long road trips.
“Great fuel economy and reliability add a lot to the appeal of the CX-9, which also has excellent resale value,” Ternullo added. “Finding value on the sticker is one thing, but what really makes a great family vehicle is its ownership cost on the road. Mazda has been consistently excellent in this area, and keeps on proving that its vehicles have what it takes to perform in New England’s challenging winters.”
