Dan Uggla Traded to Braves
Marlins Trade Uggla to Braves
On Tuesday, the Florida Marlins traded their second baseman Dan Uggla to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for utility player Omar Infante and pitcher Mike Dunn. The Uggla trade is now the first trade of the general managers meetings.
Uggla, age 30, played with the Marlins since his Major League debut back in 2006. During his time with the Fish, he hit 154 homers, was named to the All-Star team twice, and won a National League Silver Slugger Award.
According to a report from ESPN.com, "The Marlins elected to move Uggla after they were unable to reach an agreement with him on a long-term contract... Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said the trade followed the failed contract talks." Uggla is now eligible for salary arbitration and can become a free agent after the 2011 World Series.
"The deal just didn't work out. We just made the decision," said Beinfest. "Dan is a great guy. He understands. He's a great story in a lot
of ways from where he came from five years ago to where he is today."
Uggla's agent Terry Bross said Uggla "loved Florida and wanted to remain a Marlin. I'm sure he's saddened
by not being a Marlin anymore. But he'll be excited to be a Brave."
"We're satisfied he's here for one year," said Braves general manager Frank
Wren. "He's a kind of guy we'd like to make long-term."
