African National Congress Hit by Mass Resignations Following South African President Thabo Mbeki’s Decision to Step Down

Following South African President Thabo Mbeki’s decision to resign several of his key cabinet members within his African National Congress party have followed suit and announced their resignation.

Mbeki is scheduled to leave office on Thursday following pressure from ANC members. His exit will open the door for deputy leader Kgalema Motlanthe to step in prior to presidential election which will be held early 2009.

The ANC has seen a split between those who support Mbeki and those who support his chief rival Jacob Zuma. In late 2007 Zuma defeated Mbeki for the leadership role within the ANC and he is expected to become the next president of South Africa win the elections are held.

Ten cabinet members serving under the Mbeki presidency, including Finance Minister Trevor Manuel, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and Deputy Finance Jabu Moleketi, have announced they would resign on Thursday as well.

Mbeki has been accused of interfering with a trial involving Zuma in which the new leader was facing allegations of corruption.
