A Guide to Belize Excursions and Activities

Altun Ha: This ancient civilization received much attention when Dr. David Pendergast, a archeologist in Belize, discovered a nine and a half pound jade head of the sun god Kinich Ahau. This important ceremonial and once trading center is only seven miles from the sea. Thirteen structures are clustered in one extensively excavated Maya site. This tour takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes but can be altered at the guest’s wishes. Guests can climb to the top of up to three temples.

Belize Zoo: This zoo is a great introduction to Belize with over 125 animals all native to the area. These animals were either born in the zoo, were orphans, or donated to the zoo. Animals include the illusive Jaguar, the Jabiru Stork with a wingspan of 8 feet, endangered Morelet’s Crocodile,  the National Animal of Belize the Tapir and  snakes. This is an excellent opportunity to get close-up shots!

 

Belize Cave Tubing: Hike through the rainforest, ending at the cool waters of Cave’s Branch. Float into the cave system for a fantastic view of the cave formations. Continue with your Belize experience you can add on a canopy walk or, you may just relax in the clear waters of this amazing location and have a few drinks.

Community Baboon Sanctuary: Black Howler Monkeys (Alouatta pigra) are most known for their loud call caused by a hollow hyoid bone that projects the sound for miles. They are one of the most interesting creatures in Belize. The babies are most cute and adorable to look at.  At the sanctuary you will see the howlers in action. Watch them feeding, looking at you and howling away.

 

Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary: Belize has recorded over 500 species of birds within its borders. Crooked Tree is a haven for both resident and migratory birds with its swamps, waterways and lagoon. Bring your camera.

Land of Submerged Crocodile: Upon arrival at this ancient Maya trade route take a river boat through this pristine eco-system where you will encounter numerous bird species, orchids, and perhaps a crocodile. There is a possibility of spotting manatees, otters and tapir which inhabit the area.

Lamanai Maya Ruins Archeological Reserve: This incredible site boasts the longest occupation span 3000 years and the highest temple in Belize; rainforest enshrouded and teeming with wildlife such as howler monkeys, toucans and jaguarundis. Hiking down the jungle paths that join the 700+ recorded structures can be an adventure in itself. You can expect to see some of the area’s 387 species of birds, a large variety of plant species and perhaps a mammal or two. Visit seven of the site’s primary structures and of course, the fascinating remnants of the once great Maya city of Lamanai.

Spanish Church and Colonial Sugar Mill: Discover the Spanish Church and Colonial Sugar Mill constructed in 1600 and 1800 respectively or just relax by the hammocks and swim in the lagoon.

 

The Cayes: San Pedro Ambergris Caye is one of the most popular island destinations in Belize. So many different attractions! Snorkeling in one of our marine reserves called Hol Chan allows visitors to spot sharks, colorful fish and a lot of diverse marine life. You can also snorkel at Coral Gardens or Mexico Rocks. Fishing for Tarpon, Permit, and Bonefish is also easily accessible and can be done in a day’s visit. Golf addict will want to head to Caye Chapel for a round of tropical golf.
