New York Knicks to Waive Former All-Star Stephon Marbury

The New York Knicks have announced plans Tuesday to waive point guard Stephon Marbury this week.

Marbury is entering the final year of his contract, worth $21.9 million. Once Marbury clears waivers and a buyout is agreed upon, he would be free to sign with any team.

Reports from South Florida say that the Miami Heat, who desperately need a point guard, are interested in Marbury, the two-time NBA All-Star.

Marbury has recovered from January's left ankle surgery, which was needed to remove bone spurs, and has worked out all summer in Southern California, slimming down to 200 pounds.

In his four-and-a-half seasons with the Knicks, Marbury has had several spats with head coaches Larry Brown and Isiah Thomas. In Nov. 2007, Marbury left the team without permission and flew back to New York while the team played against the Suns in Phoenix.

The Knicks signed guard Anthony Roberson in July, furthering rumors that the team was getting rid of Marbury. Roberson played 36 career NBA games with Memphis and Golden State, but spent last season in Turkey and Israel. The Knicks signed him to a deal after he averaged 14.8 points in five games for their summer league team.
