Troy Davis, Georgia Man Convicted of Killing Off-Duty Police Officer, Granted Stay of Execution

Troy Davis was down to his last appeal after the Georgia Supreme Court denied his plea for a delay in his execution but the United States Supreme Court granted the 39-year-old a reprieve just two hours before he was set to die for the murder of an off-duty police officer in 1989.

Davis was convicted of the murder of Mark MacPhail in 1991 but since that time several witnesses have changed their testimony. Doubts surrounding Davis’ guilt have been well published with former President Jimmy Carter, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Pope Benedict XVI have appealed on his behalf.

Davis was set to be executed by lethal injection on Tuesday evening at a state prison in Jackson, Ga. He has admitted to being at the scene where MacPhail was murdered but has denied pulling the trigger.
