Stephon Marbury, Allan Houston to Join NY Knicks at Training Camp

Stephon Marbury will be present at the New York Knicks training camp, contrary to prior reports that the Knicks will waive him this week.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Marbury would be waived by the Knicks this week. The move would eventually lead to a buyout of the $21.9 million Marbury is owed in the final year of his contract.

Marbury, 31, is the second-highest paid player in the NBA, tied with Denver Nuggets guard Allen Iverson and behind Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett ($24.8 million). Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Kidd ($21.37 million), Toronto Raptors center Jermaine O'Neal ($21.35 million) and Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant ($21.26 million) follow Marbury and Iverson.

Marbury had been speculated to be waived in the media for months. He is coming off of his worst season of his 12-year career. He had a notorious feud with his coach and president Isiah Thomas, played in only 24 games because of injury, underwent surgery on his left ankle, and averaged career-lows in points (13.9), assists (4.7), rebounds (2.5) and minutes (33.6).

Many believe that Marbury's waiver would be part of the move needed for the Knicks to clear up salary cap room to sign LeBron James in 2010. James has a player option for the 2010-11 season, but it has been widely speculated that he will leave Cleveland and go to either the New Jersey (who will move to Brooklyn by then) Nets and the Knicks.

On Wednesday, Knicks GM Donnie Walsh said that Marbury will be at training, along with a surprise addition, former Knicks guard Allan Houston.

Walsh said that Houston, 37, has been practicing at the Knicks facility and his shooting touch is as fluid as ever. Houston is expected to sign a contract paying him the league minimum salary of $1.26 million for a player of 10 or more years experience.

If he makes the team, Houston, who wore No. 20 throughout his career, will wear No. 14 in honor of his dad Wade, who wore the number as the first African-American player at the University of Louisville.

Houston, who averaged 17.3 points over his 12-year career, was forced to retire in 2005 because of an arthritic left knee.
