Caffeinated Alcoholic Beverages Dangerous

The federal government now hopes to make it difficult for companies to sell caffeinated alcoholic beverages. This comes after college students in Washington state became ill from consuming the drinks.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission are expected to warn the manufacturers of these drinks. Their hope is that the aggressive marketing campaigns will come to an end.

According to New York Senator Charles Schumer, the warning "will effectively ban products from the market."

The drinks are cheap and popular with high school and college students. Their accessibility makes them a sure addition to campus and house parties. The beverages can contain the caffeine equivalent of up to three cups of coffee and the equivalent of three cans of beer in each can.

"Compounded with its health risks, beverages like Four Loko pose a unique danger because they target young people," Schumer said.
