Taro Aso Confirmed as New Prime Minister by Japan’s Parliament

Taro Aso has been confirmed as the newest prime minister of Japan, replacing Yasuo Fukuda who resigned from the post last September after less than a year in office.

Aso could run into the same frustrations that led to Fukuda’s resignation, opposition from the upper house. It was the lower house who overruled the upper house’s alternative choice for the prime minister, paving the way for Aso’s confirmation.

The Liberal Democratic Party leader will also be facing growing economic insecurity within the country as well as in the global markets.

It is believed Aso will quickly call a general election as a means of solidifying his authority
