Matt Millen was fired as the team president and general manager of the Detroit Lions on Wednesday.
Fox Sports first reported that Millen was leaving the position as president and GM of the Lions, but it was uncertain if he was fired or resigned. However, recent reports indicate that Millen was indeed fired from his position.
Millen learned of the firing last night and told a number of employees about the change on Wednesday morning, according to the Fox Sports report. He also had large packing boxes in his office.
The move comes two days after Ford Motor Company Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr., the Lions vice chairman and son of team owner William Clay Ford, publicly said he would have fired Millen if he had the authority to do so.
Fans, radio stations and several media reporters have advocated for Millen's firing for years. Fans created a movement called "Fire Millen" in 2005, sparked after he signed a five-year contract extension despite a poor record. He was the second-highest paid general manager in the NFL.
After seven years as the president and GM of the Lions, Millen compiled a National Football League-worst 31-84 record and the team is currently 0-3.
From 2003-2007, Millen drafted the No. 1 wide receiver in the draft in four of five years (Charles Rogers, Roy Williams, Mike Williams and Calvin Johnson), a move that was unprecedented and highly scrutinized. Rogers and Mike Williams are both out of the league.
