Lance Armstrong Joins Kazakhstan’s Astana Cycling Team

Lance Armstrong will return to professional cycling and if he captures a remarkable eighth Tour de France victory it will once again be with his close friend Johan Bruyneel who runs Kazakhstan’s Astana cycling with whom Armstrong will be riding.

Armstrong will make his return for the Swiss-based Astana at the Tour Down Under in Australia in January. He will take part in several races leading up to the 2009 Tour de France in the summer.

The 37-year-old Armstrong captured his first Tour de France victory in 1999 after battling back from cancer and he went on to win the next six years before retiring to concentrate his efforts on his “Live Strong” foundation that promotes cancer awareness.

After announcing the Astana partnership Armstrong stated, “"I look forward to 2009, I look forward to racing again, I cannot guarantee an eighth Tour victory, but I can guarantee you the 'Live Strong' message will touch all aspects of our society.”
