Atlantis Hotel on Dubai's Palm Jumeirah Island Opens Wednesday

Atlantis, the highly-anticipated resort in Dubai, opened Wednesday as the flagship resort of Dubai's Palm Jumeirah island.

The Atlantis is the first resort to open its doors on Dubai's revolutionary island. The new 1,539-room resort, which cost $1.5 billion to construct, began accepting reservations February 1, 2008.

Created by Kerzner International Holdings and Nahkeel, the Atlantis is billed as the first truly integrated entertainment resort in the world.

The resort has an enormous, open-air tank with 65,000 fish, stingrays and other sea creatures and a dolphinarium with more than two dozen bottlenose dolphins flown in from the Solomon Islands.

The top floor of the Atlantis is geared towards the very wealthy. A three-bedroom, three-bathroom suite complete with gold-leaf, 18-seat dining table is on offer for $25,000 a night.

For the time being, the Atlantis sits as the only resort on the "Palm" island, but future plans are coming around quickly.

Donald Trump plans a hotel near the center of the island's "palm." The famous QE2 ocean liner will become a hotel and a tourist attraction docked alongside its "trunk." An 1,800-seat theater nearby will house a permanent Cirque du Soleil show beginning in summer 2011.

Kerzner went private in a $3.8 billion deal partially bankrolled by a division of Nakheel's state-owned parent, Dubai World. Nakheel retains a large stake in the company.

In other news, Dubai World is teaming with MGM Mirage Inc., which the Middle Eastern company owns a minority stake in, and Kerzner to build a multibillion-dollar casino on the Las Vegas Strip.
