In the wake of Tuesday’s school shooting in Kauhajoki in which 11 people died Finland’s Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen has called on tougher gun laws that could result in the banning of private handguns.
Vanhanen visited the western town where the shooting took place and acknowledged that the current laws which permit 15-year-olds to own handguns should be tightened.
Questions surrounding police action prior to the shooting have dominated the headlines throughout Finland. A day before the school shooting police spoke with the student responsible for the attack, Matti Juhani Saari, and questioned him over a video he posted on YouTube in which he was seen firing a weapon.
Because he was a licensed gun owner and was breaking no laws the student was permitted to keep his gun and no further action was taken. The following day Matti Juhani Saari, 22, entered a building at the college and opened fire, killing nine students and a teacher before taking his own life.
With more than half the 5.2 million population of Finland owning a gun Vanhanen knows any restrictions to gun ownership could be met with strong criticism but he stated “In terms of handguns that can easily be carried about, we have to think about whether they should be available for private people. In my opinion, they belong on shooting ranges.”
Vanhanen continued, “The question is what kind of guns should be available with a licence. After these incidents, we have to discuss whether handguns should be legal.”
