Marquise Walker, an elementary school basketball phenom, was featured on ESPN's Outside the Lines this week.
Walker, an eight-year old point guard from Chicago, was the subject of an article entitled "YouTube Baby", which focused on the attention Walker has received from his YouTube video.
At a young age, Walker showed proficiency in early basketball fundamentals, which prompted his father Chikozi to videotape his son's abilities. After seeking out advice from several people, Walker began to devise a marketing strategy to get his son more attention.
The elder Walker began to post videos of his son on YouTube, entitled "The Best Kindergarten Player in the Nation," starting a swirl of hype around his toddler son.
Throughout the last couple of years, Marquise and his father have traveled to games and been taped next to some of the NBA's best players, such as LeBron James and Shawn Marion, which added credibility to how talented Marquise is.
The marketing strategy seems to be successful as Marquise. He has performed at halftime of a Memphis Grizzlies game and has received calls from the Ellen DeGeneres and Jay Leno shows.
Many people believe that the attention is too much for a child this young, but Marquise seems to be handling the pressure well. Thus far, he has 36 clips on YouTube.
