Kgalema Motlanthe has been sworn in as South Africa’s newest president, replacing Thabo Mbeki who resigned from the position earlier this week.
Motlanthe will hold the post until presidential elections are held in early 2009 at which time Jacob Zuma, leader of the ruling African National Congress party, will likely become South Africa’s next president.
Zuma defeated Mbeki in a bitter election for leadership of the ANC party and has been considered a sure-thing to replace Mbeki as president. The path for Zuma’s presidency was cleared earlier this month when a judge ruled a corruption trial targeting the leader could not move forward.
That decision was based largely on the judge’s belief that the charges had been politically motivated and that Mbeki may have had a hand in those charges. Mbeki has denied any involvement but he was pressured by the ANC to step down as president, a move he said he would follow in the interest of party.
On Thursday Motlanthe garnered 269 of the 368 votes vast by MPs to earn the presidential position. Motlanthe will have the difficult task of bringing together the members of the ANC who support Zuma and those who back Mbeki.
