2,000 Fetuses Discovered at Thailand Temple

Two morticians of a Buddhist temple in Bangkok, Thailand have been charged with hiding bodies after authorities discovered more than 2,000 illegally aborted fetuses earlier this week. The smell of rotting flesh led to the discovery at the Phai-nguern Chotinaram temple.

Police Col. Metee Rakpan said a total of 2,002 fetuses were recovered.

"From the confession of one of the morticians of the temple that we interrogated last night, he told us that they received these fetuses from the same places as the first lot of 348 fetus remains, and they became dry. We think that they might have arrived here about a year ago,” said Col. Sombat Milintachinda. "From our interrogation of the morticians, they admitted that they have been receiving fetuses for about four years, and they told us that they kept the fetuses until they dried up, so it is easy to burn them.”

A woman has also been arrested in connection with the case. She has been charged with opening an unlicensed clinic and performing illegal abortions. Abortion in Thailand is only legal if the woman has been raped or if her pregnancy puts her life in danger.
