AP Top 25 College Football Results: #1 USC Trojans Upset by Unranked Oregon State Beavers
The #1 USC Trojans were upset in their Pac-10 conference opener against unranked Oregon State Beavers, 27-21, on Thursday night.
The Beavers' win marks the second consecutive home win against the Trojans, defeating then-#3 Southern Cal, 33-31, in 2006. It was Oregon State's first win against a No. 1 team since they defeated O.J. Simpson's USC team in 1967.
Oregon State freshman running back Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns, and Oregon State built a 21-point first-half lead before USC's Mark Sanchez began what seemed to be a likely comeback.
As USC scored two touchdowns to get the score to 21-14 in the fourth quarter, Sanchez threw an interception to safety Greg Laybourn on the 30-yard line with less than three minutes to play. Rodgers then scored to make the game 27-14.
Sanchez then marched the Trojans down the field, throwing a touchdown pass to Patrick Turner with less than two minutes left to get the score to 27-21.
USC went for an onside kick, but the ball went directly to an Oregon State wide receiver, who immediately downed it. The Beavers then ran the clock out as rabid students and fans stormed the field.
Sanchez completed 18-for-29 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns. Linebacker Rey Maualuga suffered an injury late in the fourth quarter. It is not certain the severity of the injury for the defensive star.
James Rodgers, Jacquizz's brother, caught six passes for 36 yards and two touchdowns, including an amazing catch off of a tip ball by a USC defensive back in the second quarter.
The loss marks the sixth time in history that a No. 1 team has lost to an unranked team before October. The last time came when No. 1 Auburn lost to Tennessee in 1985.
