College Football Schedule Week 5: Notre Dame Looks to Bounce Back Against In-State Rival Purdue
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (2-1) will look to bounce back after their disappointing loss to Michigan State last week as they take on their in-state rival Purdue Boilermakers (2-1) at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Notre Dame opened the season with a pair of wins against San Diego State and Michigan and then fell apart against the Spartans last week, collecting just 16 yards rushing and turning the ball over three times in a 23-7 loss.
The Irish gave up 203 yard rushing last week and they’ll be faced with the challenge of containing Boilermakers senior running back Kory Sheets who has already rushed for 356 yards and six TDs (ninth in the country) in Purdue’s three games.
Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis should be well familiar with Sheets following last year’s game in which the then junior collected 141 yards rushing and a touchdown in Purdue’s 33-19 win in West Lafayette. That win pushed Purdue to 5-0 and into the AP Top 25 while dropping the Irish to 0-5.
Also returning for the Boilermakers will be Curtis Painter who threw for over 200 yards and two TDs against the Irish a year ago.
Purdue rebounded from their overtime loss to Oregon in their second game with a 32-25 victory over Central Michigan last week after Sheets scored on a 46-yard run with a minute left in the game.
Notre Dame will not only have to stop the run of Purdue but find a running game of their own after an obvious setback last week when they had to rely on the arm of Jimmy Clausen who tossed a pair of interceptions that ended strong drives. With the 112th ranked running game in college football and the 91st ranked scoring offense it won’t be easy.
