UN Draft Resolution to Uphold Sanctions Against Iran

Iran’s decision to move forward with its nuclear program has resulted in a UN draft resolution that would uphold the sanctions that have been imposed on the Middle East country.

The resolution was agreed upon by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council; Russia, United States, China, France and the UK as well as Germany. It could be voted on as early as this weekend.

Iran has refused to halt its uranium enrichment and plutonium reprocessing programs, a move that has caused great concern among the UN members. Iran has also ignored the International Atomic Energy Agency who has questioned their motives for their nuclear program.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has insisted their nuclear program was peaceful but has provided no assurances to back that claim up.

Friday’s draft resolution would not impose any new sanctions on Iran but merely reaffirm the existing sanctions placed on Iran. UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband said the latest resolution was a means to, “affirm our unity ...rally international support and ... show our determination to ensure that the international rules are upheld in this very important area.”
