FDA Issues Warning on Mr. Brown Instant Coffee Made in China

The Food and Drug Administration has put out a warning encouraging consumers to avoid seven products under the brand name Mr. Brown instant coffee as well as milk tea products that were manufactured in China.

Friday’s warning comes as concerns surrounding Chinese products continue to grow. The products sited by the FDA have been recalled by King Car Food Industrial Co Ltd after officials determined the products may have contained melamine.

Earlier this month China was rocked by an outbreak of infant illnesses that in caused kidney stones. Those illnesses were traced back to baby formula that contained melamine, a toxic chemical used in fertilizer, cleaning products and plastics.

Originally thought to be confined to just China, now several dairy products that have been shipped to other countries have been found to contain melamine. Several countries have since banned the import of Chinese dairy.

Looking to cut back on costs many dairy plant operators were using melamine as a substitute in their products. Melamine can appear like a nutrient, escaping the scrutiny of passive investigators.

The coffee and tea products affected by the recall and winning are: Mr. Brown Mandheling Blend Instant Coffee (3-in-1); Mr. Brown Arabica Instant Coffee (3-in-1); Mr. Brown Blue Mountain Blend Instant Coffee (3-in-1); Mr. Brown Caramel Macchiato Instant Coffee (3-in-1); Mr. Brown French Vanilla Instant Coffee (3-in-1); Mr. Brown Mandhling Blend instant Coffee (2-in-1); Mr. Brown Milk Tea (3-in-1)
