Jimmie Johnson Wins 5th Straight Sprint Cup
Jimmie Johnson Makes Racing History
On Sunday, racing great Jimmie Johnson became the first person ever to win five consecutive Sprint Cup championships. With 7 Sprint Cup titles each, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt are the only two racers who have ever won more Sprint Cup titles than Johnson has so far, but neither Petty nor Earnhardt ever won more than two Sprint Cup titles in a row.
According to a report from the Associated Press, "Johnson became the first driver in the seven-year history of the Chase
for the Sprint Cup championship to overcome a points deficit in the
season finale."
"I've always told you the first championship, the first win, that stuff
has meant the most to me. This one, I think this takes the lead," said Johnson. "It's not that the other Chases weren't competitive. We
were stronger in the previous two Chases, at least, but this one, I am
just so proud."
"Finally, finally, Jimmie will definitely get his just rewards now," said Johnson's crew chief Chad Knaus.
