Richard Seymour Fined $25,000 For Roethlisberger Hit
By Jesse Rousseau
Oakland Raiders defensive linemen Richard Seymour has been fined $25,000 for hitting Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in the face. The NFL fined him on Monday for unnecessary roughness, but stopped short of suspending the player.
The hit came in the second quarter of the Steelers’ 35-3 victory on Sunday. While celebrating a touchdown that gave his team a 21-3 lead, Roethlisberger came up behind Seymour and was then struck in the face by the former Patriots player. The quarterback fell to ground after the hit, but was not injured and finished out the game.
Seymour later told reporters he was did not understand why Roethlisberger came up behind after the score.
"I'm not sure why he [Roethlisberger] ran up on me. I just turned around and it was a natural reaction.”
Roethlisberger didn’t have much to say about the incident after the game.
"It is what it is," said the Steelers quarterback. "I wasn't expecting that from him."
