Car Bomb in Syria Kills at least 17, More than a Dozen Injured

A car, packed with an estimated 440 pounds of explosives, detonated near a security checkpoint on the outskirts of the Syrian capital city Damascus on Saturday, killing at least 17 people and injuring 14.

The explosion took place near a Shia shrine highly revered by Iraqi, Lebanese and Iranian Muslims but the intended target of the blast has not been identified. Syrian Interior Minister Bassam Abdul-Majid described the attack as a “cowardly act” by terrorists and while there has been no blame laid yet, “the ongoing investigations will lead us to the perpetrators.”

The death toll from the explosion was expected to rise as the destruction in the heavily populated area was extensive.
