Strong Earthquake Hits Eastern Papua New Guinea

A strong earthquake struck eastern Papua New Guinea Tuesday at 7:01 p.m. local time. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was a 6.0 magnitude and struck at a depth of 45 miles.

The epicenter was located about 31 miles west-northwest of Kandrian. A tsunami warning was not issued. There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries.

Strong earthquakes in Papua New Guinea often don’t cause major damage because many areas are sparsely populated.
