Miami Heat to Sign Erick Dampier

Dampier to Replace Injured Haslem

Sources have told ESPN.com that the Miami Heat are expected to sign NBA veteran Erick Dampier to replace Udonis Haslem, who sustained an injury on Saturday that may require surgery and months of recovery. According to sources, Dampier may be signed as soon as Tuesday if he passes a physical. Sources also say that the Heat have released NBA vet Jerry Stackhouse from the team in order to clear up some salary space for Dampier.

Heat sources have confirmed that Haslem will be receiving injury Tuesday for a torn ligament in his left foot. After the surgery, Haslem may be out until February, says one source.

Heat president Pat Riley addressed the need to replace Haslem on Sunday night, saying, "We need more rebounding, and we need obviously somebody that is going to have a big body in the paint that can make a difference and have an impact. We will consider something like that."

Since his release by the Charlotte Bobcats in September, Dampier has been pursued by a number of teams, including the Houston Rockets. According to sources, Dampier held off on making a decision because he was determined to join the Heat, his first choice, or another title contender.
