In a game that featured a combined nine turnovers and 14 punts the Michigan Wolverines managed to overcome a 19-0 halftime deficit (2-2) to beat the #9 Wisconsin Badgers (3-1) 27-25 on Saturday at Ann Arbor.
Wisconsin had only themselves to blame for the loss as they dominated the offensive side of the ball , holding an advantage of nearly 13 minutes in time of possession and outgained the Wolverines by more than 100 yards but could only turn four first half turnovers into nine points, opening the door for a Michigan comeback.
Despite his first half struggles Steven Threet put the Wolverines on the board late in the third quarter with a 26-yard TD pass to Kevin Koger. Brandon Minor then cut the Wolverines deficit to 19-14 after scoring on a 34-yard run early in the fourth quarter and on Wisconsin’s next possession Allan Evridge was picked off by John Thompson who returned the ball 25 yards for a TD and a Michigan lead at 20-19.
Threet then set up the next Wolverines score with a 58-yard run to get inside the Wisconsin 20-yard-line and Sam McGuffie pounded the ball in from 3-yrads out for a 27-19 advantage.
Evridge then moved Wisconsin down to the Michigan 5-yard-line but he fumbled and Michigan recovered with 1:42 left on the clock. Wisconsin managed to force Michigan to punt and Evridge drove the badgers down the field and found David Gilreath on a 22-yard TD pass with 13 seconds left in the game but their two-point attempt to tie the game fell short and Michigan had the upset.
Michigan will host Illinois next week while Wisconsin will host Ohio State.
