The #15 Auburn Tigers (4-1) relied on their defense to hold the Tennessee Volunteers (1-3) to just 191 total yards, nine first downs and 4-16 third down conversions and then thwarted a two-point attempt in the fourth quarter to preserve a 14-12 victory on Saturday.
Chris Todd put the Tigers on the board in the first quarter when he found Robert Dunn on an 18-yard touchdown toss. After a pair of Daniel Lincoln field goals in the second quarter the Volunteers trimmed their deficit to 7-6 but the Tigers boosted their lead to 14-6 after Jonathan Crompton fumbled in the endzone and Jake Ricks recovered.
After both teams failed to score in the third quarter the Volunteers found the endzone in the opening seconds of the fourth as Montario Hardesty scored from 2-yards out but Tennessee’s two-point attempt failed. From that point on neither team could do much on offense as they traded punts but after Auburn got the ball with just under three minutes left they converted a big 3rd and 5 and were able to run the rest of the clock out.
Auburn will travel to Vanderbilt next week while Tennessee tries to get back on track against Northern Illinois.
