Canadian survey shows teens, parents disconnected regarding drug use

Parents are in the dark regarding teen drug use

A survey conducted by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse shows that many parents are disillusioned when it comes to drug use and their children.

Of the Canadian parents surveyed, 70 percent said that they don’t believe their children, ages 12-17, have ever experimented with drugs. The truth, however, is that nearly one-third of Canadian 15-17 year olds and nearly half of 18-19 year olds experimented with marijuana in the past year alone.

“Teen drug use is a steadily growing problem,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “While this survey was conducted in Canada, we know that the statistics are as frightening in all regions of the world. Canadian parents are no different than parents in any other country; all parents want to believe their children are doing the right thing and, certainly, no parent wants to believe that their child regularly uses illegal substances or has even experimented with illegal substances. But, as this survey shows, the reality is that many teens are actively involved in drug use, unbeknownst to their parents. This type of survey and study is important as it shows that no family is immune to the reach of drug use.”

Although this particular survey focuses on teen drug use in Canada, various organizations have commissioned studies such as this one in the United States. Statistics from those studies have shown to be similar to the recent findings in Canada. Research has also shown that children whose parents speak to them about the dangers of drug use are 50% less likely to use illegal substances.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center has long been an advocate of alcohol and drug abuse prevention for teens and young adults through education, starting at the family and community levels. Since its inception, Mountainside has been committed to creating ways that will help young people to stay away from alcohol and illegal drugs and, if using them, to get and to remain sober.

The compassionate, caring treatment team at Mountainside is comprised of licensed and certified counselors and social workers as well as a Nurse Practitioner and a Registered Nurse, both of whom have specialization and extensive experience in drug addiction and alcohol treatment. For clients who may have psychiatric issues and/or a dual diagnosis, Mountainside provides the services of a Psychiatrist who also has specialization in addictions. As a result of their unique, innovative approaches to addiction treatment over the past 12 years, Mountainside has become the model for the addiction treatment field.

The program, along with its professional addiction treatment team, have earned national recognition and resulted in Mountainside being invited to Washington by the White House to meet with the White House Drug Czar, John P. Waters, for an in-depth meeting on what makes its program so successful. These accolades did not go unnoticed within the addiction treatment field and resulted in the adoption by many throughout the country of a more holistic approach to drug addiction treatment.
