AP Top 25 College Football Scores: Charles Scott Runs #5 LSU Tigers Past Mississippi State in SEC Showdown

Charles Scott rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns, Jarrett Lee threw for 261 yards and a pair of TDs and Brandon LaFell had seven receptions for 100 yards as the #5 LSU Tigers (4-0) did enough to beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-4) 34-24 on Saturday night.

Scott scored both his touchdowns in the first half; each on one-yard runs but the Tigers only led 17-10 at the break.

It looked as if LSU would pull away in the third quarter after a strange play in which Lee hit LaFell deep in Bulldogs territory and he then fumbled into the endzone but Richard Dickson recovered for the Tigers and boosted their lead to 24-10. Colt David then kicked his second field goal of the game and LSU was up 27-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

Mississippi State answered with an 18-play drive that ended in a one-yard touchdown run from Anthony Dixon to climb to within 27-17 but Lee dashed the Bulldogs hopes of a comeback when he found Demetrius Byrd on a 43-yard touchdown strike with just under five minutes left on the clock.

The Bulldogs added a score late but it wasn’t enough to upset the Tigers.

LSU will face Florida in two weeks while Mississippi Sate takes on Vanderbilt in two weeks.
