Daryll Clark threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 50 yards and a score while Evan Royster collected 139 yards on 19 carries and Derrick Williams had a combined 108 yards rushing and receiving and a score as well as 133 yards in kick returns including a 94-yarder for a touchdown as the #12 Penn State Nittany Lions (5-0) knocked off the #22 Illinois Fighting Illini (2-2) 38-24 on Saturday night.
Both teams traded blows in the opening quarter as Illinois struck first with a one-yard TD run from Jason Ford but Clark answered for Penn State on a one-yarder of his own to knot the score at 7-7. Juice Williams then put the Illini in the endzone on a 33-yard touchdown toss to Arrelious Benn but Clark stepped up once more and brought Penn State even with a 22-yard strike to Williams and at the end of the opening frame it was 14-14.
Williams then provided eth only points of the second quarter when he scored on a run of 5-yards and Penn State went into halftime with a 21-14 lead.
That lead was pushed to 24-14 after a field goal from Kevin Kelly but Matt Eller got the three-points back for Illinois with a field goal of his own to end the third quarter. On the ensuing kickoff Williams took the ball 94-yards for a touchdown and gave the Nittany Lions a ten-point cushion.
That didn’t last long as Juice pushed Illinois back down the field and when he found Benn on a 54-yard touchdown pass it was back to a seven-point game 31-24 with just under 13 minutes left. Clark answered the challenge as he led a 7-play 77-yard drive that was capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Quarless that appeared to break Illinois’ hopes as they fumbled on their next possession and then turned the ball over on downs before Penn State ran the clock out.
Penn State will travel to Purdue next week while Illinois travels to Michigan.
