Last week, Xanodyne, the manufacturer of propoxyphene, which is also known as Darvon/Darvocet, agreed to recall of all their Darvon/ Darvocet drugs after increased pressure from the FDA.
Xanodyne has had a history of scrutiny since 1957 when Darvon was introduced as a painkiller to relieve mild to moderate post-surgical pain.
To date 3,000 serious reports of Darvon and Darvocet problems have been identified, most involving heart problems, suicides, addiction and overdoses. In addition, the FDA indicated that Darvocet and Darvon provide little to no more pain relief than taking acetaminophen alone.
The FDA showed concern for the safety of Darvon/Darvocet users beginning in January 2009, when an advisory committee meeting addressed the health concerns and public safety surrounding propoxyphene. The committee voted 14 to 12 against the continued marketing of propoxyphene products. In the summer of 2009, the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) asked the manufacturer to end all marketing and advertising in the European Union. And in the United States, the FDA required that a new warning be added to the drug label which informed patients and health care professionals to the risk of a fatal overdose.
If you or a loved one experienced a serious side effect associated with taking Darvon or Darvocet, you may be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages, and other injuries.
