British candy maker Cadbury has issued a recall for all of their Chinese-made products over fear that the chocolate and candy may contain melamine-laced milk. Cadbury’s Singapore office released a statement saying tests “cast doubt on the integrity of a range of our products manufactured in China.”
The recalled products were made in Cadbury’s Beijing factory and were distributed in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia. At least 11 different confectionary items are a part of the recall.
Melamine-laced milk has been blamed for the deaths of four Chinese children and has made at least 50,000 ill. Melamine is an industrial chemical used to make a range of household products including countertops, dry erase boards, fabrics, glues, houseware, flame retardants, concrete and fertilizer.
It is sometimes illegally added to food products to increase the apparent protein content. Melamine is nitrogen-rich and food products are often tested for their protein levels by measuring the nitrogen content.
In 2007, pet food manufactures issued a recall after finding that some of their products had been contaminated with Melamine. The contaminated food was responsible for the deaths of several pets and caused serious illnesses in others.
