One day after six suspected kidnappers were killed by Sudanese forces the 19 hostages captured in southern Egypt were freed without a ransom being paid.
The hostages, which included five Germans, five Italians, a Romanian and eight Egyptian tour guides, are now at a military base in Cairo and are said to be in good health.
On Sunday Sudanese forces were involved in a high-speed chase with a white SUV packed with gunmen. The forces killed six inside the SUV and captured the remaining two who admitted to being part of the group who kidnapped the 19 individuals.
Inside the vehicle Sudanese officials discovered ransom notes and several weapons.
The group of tourists had been traveling in southern Egypt in a volatile area when they were abducted by gunmen. There were reports that the kidnappers moved the hostages into Sudan and Chad but those reports have not been substantiated. The kidnappers were demanding an $8.8 million ransom.
