Otep Shamaya Talks Politics and Activism on New Episode of Dave Navarro's Spread TV

On an all new episode of Dave Navarro's Spread TV, Dave and Todd sit down with the Otep Shamaya, lead singer of the Nu-Metal band OTEP, to discuss her views on self-esteem, global warming, music, and politics. Otep is well known for her heavy screaming; gritty lyrical elements, and flair for spoken word. Otep's deep involvement in activism and politics has a following of its own, as demonstrated by winning the "Rock the Vote MySpace DemROCKracy" contest this past summer, and her inclusion on the bill of "Rock the Vote's Ballot Bash" on August 25th; joining Fall Out Boy, N.E.R.D. and Jakob Dylan on stage at Denver's Elli Caulkins Opera House during the Democratic National Convention.

During the show, Otep discusses her most recent campaigns "Carbon Rally" and "All Shapes & Sizes", explaining the mission behind Carbon Rally as a web-based activism platform that gives everyday people a way to have a measurable impact on climate change, and All Shapes & Sizes as "a social site created to help redefine ideologies and philosophies about self-esteem". The trio also engage in a discussion about music labels, the mutual inspiration gained by Barack Obama, and what's in store for OTEP's future.

About Nu-Metal Band OTEP

Otep Shamaya brought her Marilyn Manson-meets-Kim Gordon style of singing to a crew of musicians known only as Rob, Moke, and eViL j. The foursome began gigging around Los Angeles and scored a deal with Capitol solely on the strength of their live show (they'd not yet recorded a demo), releasing the Jihad EP the following year. Rumors of cannibalism and dabbling in the mystical arts helped add to their mysterious image, and they found themselves being complimented by the likes of Marilyn Manson himself for their antics. Their eighth live show ever was at 2001's Ozzfest, and Otep stepped back into the studio with Terry Date at the tail end of the year to record their full-length debut, Sevas Tra, which saw the light of day in the summer of 2002. That summer they again joined up with the Ozzfest tour, gaining a prime spot on the second stage. In 2004 the group released their sophomore effort, House of Secrets. Working with producer Dave Fortman (Evanescence, Mudvayne), Otep followed up three years later with The Ascension and supported it on spring 2007 dates with Static-X. - Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
