India and France Reach Nuclear Agreement

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have signed an agreement that will open the door for the sale of nuclear reactors to Delhi.

The agreement, signed in Paris on Tuesday, “will form the basis for enlarged bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy and research,” according to Sarkozy.

The deal comes shortly after the U.S. House of Representatives agreed to provide India with access to civilian nuclear technology without signing the Non-Proliferation Treaty. While India doesn’t have to sign the NPT the agreement does require their facilities remain open to inspectors, but not their nuclear weapons sites.

For the U.S. deal to pass the Senate must approve the measure; they are expected to vote on the deal next week.

India is under pressure to meet an increased demand for energy.
