South Africa’s ruling African National Congress has dismissed speculation that the party could split due to the recent controversy surrounding the resignation of former President Thabo Mbeki and the ascension of new leader Jacob Zuma.
Zuma had defeated Mbeki for the ANC leadership last December and is widely expected to win the presidential election early next year but he has been subjected to numerous charges of corruption and prosecutors have attempted to take him to trial.
A judge recently ordered Zuma would not face trial due to interference in the case, hinting that Mbeki may have had something to do with the charges.
Mbeki has denied any involvement but announced he would step down as president in the interest of the ANC. Following his announcement several ministers announced their resignation, leading many to believe a split in the party could occur.
Kgalema Motlanthe has stepped in as interim president and will remain until the presidential elections are held. Motlanthe has promised to make the transition from Mbeki to Zuma as smooth as possible and is seen as a positive bridge between the two leaders.
Finance Minister Trevor Manuel, who announced his resignation shortly after Mbeki stepped down, recently agreed to take a position within the new cabinet. Manuel noted, “I can't for a moment believe that there's anybody in their right minds who would want us to abandon the source of our sustainable growth over more than a decade, to abandon that on the altar of some populism.”
