Chicago White Sox Punch Ticket to Playoffs with Win Over Minnesota Twins

John Danks pitched eight scoreless innings, Jim Thome hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning and Bobby Jenks pitched a perfect ninth inning to give the Chicago White Sox a 1-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins to capture the American League Central and punch their ticket to the playoffs where they will now face the Tampa Bay Rays.

The White Sox and Twins were dead even after 162 games, forcing the need for a one-game playoff in Chicago and for 6.5 innings the teams remained dead even. It wasn’t until Thome caught a Nick Blackburn change-up over the plate and crushed it over the centerfield wall.

Danks was sensational in his start, giving the White Sox their first 1-0 victory of the season but he got some help from Ken Griffey Jr. who cut down Michael Cuddyer at the plate in the fifth to keep the game scoreless. Two innings later Thome gave Danks all the run support he would need with a blast estimated at 461 feet.

With the White Sox’s win it is the first time in 102 years that both teams from Chicago have made the playoffs in the same season. The Chicago Cubs locked up the National League central and will host the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The White Sox will open their series with the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday.
