EU Observers Enter Buffer Zone in Near South Ossetia

European Union observers have entered the Russian-created buffer zone around South Ossetia to monitor the current ceasefire between Russia and Georgia and oversee a Russian troop pullout.

Russia has said they would complete their pullout from buffer zones around the Georgian breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by Oct. 10. Russian troops have occupied the areas for nearly two months following their brief war with Georgia.

The Russian pullout was part of a French-brokered peace deal that ended the conflict but Moscow has said they would keep nearly 8,000 troops in both South Ossetia and Abkhazia, regions they have recognized as independent states.

As part of the peace deal unarmed EU Monitoring Mission observers were to enter the buffer zones created by Russia to monitor the progress of the ceasefire and ensure Russian troops left the area by Oct. 10.
