South Africa Criticized Sharply for Closure of Migrant Camps

South Africa’s decision to force the closure of migrant camps despite the Constitutional Court ordering them to remain open has been sharply criticized by the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres which has said those living in the camps have nowhere to go and if they return to their homes they will be attacked.

Foreigners living in South Africa fled to the camps four months ago after a surge in xenophobic violence. Large groups targeted the foreigners, blaming them for high unemployment, rising costs in food and an increase in violence.

More than 60 people were killed and thousands more driven from their homes as mobs conducted daily assaults. To ease the tension several camps were set up to provide the foreigners a safe haven while the government tried to establish control.

Now the government has argued that it is safe for the refugees to return to their homes, a belief not held by those inside the camp or the organizations that have been providing relief. At least 1,200 foreigners have been forced out of the camps, a move that has been called illegal by the Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa which cited the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the matter.

Many of those forced out due to camp closures have returned to their country of origin, fearing a return to their home in South Africa would only invite more violence.
