After months of rumors and denial, the University of Miami has finally made it official.
Randy Shannon is no longer the Hurricanes head coach. The move comes after Miami’s 23-20 overtime loss to South Florida; it’s fifth loss of the season. The news was released last night through a press release.
“We have made a decision to seek new leadership for our football program,” athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in the statement. “Our expectations are to compete for championships and return to the top of the college football world. We will immediately begin a national search.”
Hocutt did not mention if Shannon will coach UM’s bowl game, but he plans to address the media with more details today.
Shannon spent four years at Miami with a 28-22 overall record. He was right at .500 in the ACC (16-16).
According to The Miami Herald, the Hurricanes are very interested in speaking with Georgia’s Mark Richt and former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach regarding the vacancy.
