MLB Playoffs Schedule Wednesday, Oct. 1: Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Angels Host Game Openers

The 2008 Major League Baseball playoffs get started today and after a wild final week of the season all the pieces are in place as the run for the World Series begins. There are some historic storylines for several teams entering the playoffs as the Tampa Bay Rays enter postseason for the first time in franchise history, for the first time since 1906 both the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox are playing in the postseason in the same year, the Cubs are seeking their first World Series title since capturing the crown in 1908 and while the White Sox ended an 86-year drought by winning the World Series in 2005 this could be the last chance for Jim Thome and Ken Griffey Jr. to get a ring.

Philadelphia Phillies fans last saw a World Series title in 1980 and the Los Angeles Dodgers are seeking their first title since their improbable series win against the Oakland A’s in 1988. The Dodgers aren’t the only club from L.A. playing in the postseason as the Angeles posted the best record in the MLB but now face the Boston Red Sox who have won nine straight playoff games against the Halos dating back to 1986. It’s been a long time for the Milwaukee Brewers as well, they haven’t been in the postseason since 1982 and that was as an American League team that fell to the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.
