Christopher Hill in North Korea in Attempt to Salvage Nuclear Deal

Christopher Hill, the current Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs for the United States has arrived in North Korea in an attempt to salvage a deal with Pyongyang involving nuclear disarmament for aid.

North Korea had begun dismantling their main reactor in Yongbyon as part of that deal but in August they took steps to restore its capabilities after declaring the U.S. had failed to keep their end of the deal.

As part of the disarmament-for-aid deal the U.S. was to remove North Korea from list of state sponsors of terrorism. Pyongyang had provided accounts of their nuclear facilities but they remained on the U.S. list after Washington demanded more detailed information to verify the accounts.

Hill is believed to be in North Korea to offer a less stringent verification process in order to keep the deal in place.
