Drug abuse and drug addiction affect people of all social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds. As more people are becoming drug addicted to prescription medication and other drugs, many are turning to their local pastor, priest or rabbi for help.
“Traditionally, one’s spiritual adviser is someone one can turn to for help with one’s troubled soul,” comments Mary Rieser, Executive Director for Narconon Drug Rehab in Georgia. “But drug addiction, although spiritually troubling, also has bio-physical qualities that a person of the cloth may not understand. Despite their intense desire to help, someone not knowledgeable with the aspects of drug addiction may become frustrated and give someone up for lost.
“We have had very positive response from churches in the area," stated Ms. Rieser. "We have delivered seminars to members of Baptist Churches, Catholic Churches and Methodist Churches, and they are very enthusiastic about being able to help their parishioners.
“One thing we stress is that drug addiction can be beat. With support from friends, family, and their local church, drug addiction does not mean a life-long sentence of pain and suffering. Yet unless one knows what causes addiction, and how to properly deal with it, most people throw up their hands.
“The drug education lectures we have given to church workers has sparked hope in their eyes, and by learning the signs of drug abuse and the mechanics of addiction, they are better prepared to help their flock.”
Churches from all over the Southeast, including the Atlanta Metro Area, and as far away as Savannah, GA, and Virginia have requested training on helping their parishioners.
Ms. Rieser states: "We believe that recovery and drug prevention starts in the home, church and community. We encourage anyone interested in helping their neighbors, friends or family to contact us."
One Catholic priest commented, "We have a growing problem with drug and alcohol addiction in our parish. Unfortunately I can fill them with the Holy Spirit, but if the vessel is broken, the Holy Spirit empties out. With the tools provided by Narconon Drug Rehab, I can help fix the vessel so that the Holy Spirit can fill them and keep them filled."
