Oceana Launches “Freaky Fish 2008: Return from the Deep”

Ocean conservation group announces online contest to broaden awareness about deep sea marine creatures

Just when people thought it was safe to surf the world wide web, freaky fish are swimming up from the depths of the sea to frighten ocean lovers in what will be the spookiest election this fall.  Today ocean conservation group Oceana announced an online contest, “Freaky Fish 2008: Return from the Deep”, which allows web visitors to view rarely seen creatures from the ocean abyss and help elect the scariest looking fish for a chance to win prizes.  Winners will be announced on Halloween, October 31st.

“When most people think of marine life, they usually imagine popular creatures like
dolphins, whales, sharks and sea turtles,” said McGregor.  “These charismatic creatures have nothing on the group of 13 Freaky Fish we’ve chosen for the contest.”  From vampire squid to glow-in-the-dark angler fish to seadevils, Freaky Fish 2008 was designed to be surprising and frightening, but the end goal is educating people about the hidden treasures of the deep sea.

The 13 Freaky Fish were chosen from journalist, producer, and film director Claire Nouvian’s new book, “The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss”.  Voters who help elect the freakiest fish have a chance to win an autographed copy of the book, as well a pair of IMAX tickets. Four runners up will also get pairs of tickets to IMAX theaters where they can see some of these abyssal creatures in the feature Deep Sea 3-D.

Freaky Fish voting starts October 1st and will be done through  Oceana’s online community center at:
