Hikers in California may have found missing millionaire Steve Fossett’s pilot’s ID and sweat shirt. Fossett, known for his love of adventures, went missing in September 2007 after he took off from the Flying-M Ranch near Minden, Nevada in a single-engine plane.
The 63-year-old said he was just going to fly over the Sierra Nevada mountain range but never returned. He was declared legally dead in February.
Hikers found a pilot’s license bearing Fossett’s name and a weathered sweatshirt near Mammoths Lakes. The license didn’t have a photo. “We’re not certain that it belongs to Steve Fossett, but it certainly has his name on the ID,” police Chief Randy Schienle says.
No plane wreckage or body was found. The area will be searched by air and on foot for any other clues as to what happened to Fossett.
Fossett loved to fly and set several world records. In 2002, he became the first person to circle the world in a balloon. He became the first person to fly around the world solo without refueling in 2005.
